For UK visas applied for from Pakistan, the Home Office aims to decide most visit, study and work applications within 3 weeks, and family (settlement) applications within 12 weeks, counted from your biometrics appointment. For many visas you can pay for priority (usually 5 working days) or super priority (usually by the end of the next working day). These are targets, not guarantees.
Current service standards for applications from outside the UK
The table below reflects the GOV.UK processing times page, last updated on 9 September 2026.
| Visa type | Standard service | Priority (extra £500) | Super priority (extra £1,000) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visit: Standard Visitor, Marriage Visitor, Transit | 3 weeks | Usually 5 working days | Usually end of next working day |
| Study: Student, Child Student, Short-term study | 3 weeks | Usually 5 working days | Usually end of next working day |
| Work: Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, temporary work routes | 3 weeks | Usually 5 working days | Usually end of next working day |
| Family: spouse or partner, parent, child, adult dependent relative | 12 weeks | Usually up to 30 working days | Check availability when you book |
Priority and super priority are not offered for every visa type or at every centre, and availability can change. When you book your appointment with VFS Global, which runs the UK visa application centres in Pakistan, you will see which options are available for your visa.
For more detail on timings after your appointment, see our sister site’s guide to UK visa processing time after biometrics, and its guide to priority visas.
What has changed from older guides
If you read older guides, some of the numbers will be out of date:
- the old standards of 15 working days for non-settlement visas and 60 working days for settlement visas have been replaced by 3 weeks and 12 weeks;
- priority for family visas from outside the UK now usually takes up to 30 working days, not 15;
- since 1 July 2026, successful applicants get an eVisa instead of a vignette sticker in the passport, so you no longer need a sticker to travel;
- priority now costs £500 and super priority £1,000 per person.
When the clock starts
Processing starts when you attend your appointment at the visa application centre to give your fingerprints and photograph. (Some nationalities can use the UK Immigration: ID Check app instead, but it is not open to Pakistani passport holders.) The days before your appointment, while you complete the form and wait for a slot, do not count.
Weekends and UK bank holidays do not count towards priority and super priority times, which are measured in working days.
Why some applications take longer
GOV.UK lists several reasons an application can go beyond the standard time:
- the information in your application is not accurate or needs further consideration;
- UKVI needs more evidence, such as proof of funds;
- your supporting documents need to be verified;
- you are asked to attend an interview;
- UKVI needs more information about your personal circumstances, such as a criminal conviction;
- demand for visas is high;
- there is an unexpected technical outage.
From Pakistan, the ones we see most often are document verification (bank letters, employment letters and property papers being checked) and credibility interviews for students and visitors. Summer is also the busiest period, as students apply for September courses.
What to do if your decision is late
- Count correctly. Count from your biometrics date. Three weeks is 15 working days; priority times exclude weekends and UK bank holidays.
- Check your email, including spam. UKVI may have asked for more information. Reply quickly and completely.
- Contact UKVI if you are past the published time and have not been contacted, using the contact options on GOV.UK.
- Do not go back to the centre unless you have been told to. GOV.UK says if you left your passport at the centre, wait until you are contacted.
- Keep your travel flexible. Do not buy non-refundable tickets before you have a decision.
- Tell UKVI about genuine urgency, such as a serious illness in the family, with evidence.
Planning checklist: when to apply
- Visit visas: you can apply up to 3 months before you travel. For weddings, Eid visits and summer holidays, apply as early as the rules allow.
- Student visas: you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts, once you have your CAS.
- Skilled Worker visas: you can apply up to 3 months before your job start date.
- Family visas: allow at least 12 weeks, plus time for the English test, TB test and gathering financial evidence.
- Everything: book your appointment slot early, as popular dates fill up.
Common mistakes we see from Pakistan applications
- Counting from the payment date. The standard starts at your biometrics appointment, not when you submitted the form.
- Assuming priority means approval. Priority buys speed, not a better outcome. A weak application refused in 5 days is still refused.
- Paying for priority on a complex case. If UKVI needs to check your details or ask questions, the application can go beyond the priority time, and GOV.UK says the fee is usually not refunded.
- Booking flights first. Wait for the decision.
- Missing an email request. A request for more documents sitting unanswered in spam adds weeks.
- Poor document quality. Blurred scans and unverifiable letters lead to checks and delays.
FAQ
Is 3 weeks guaranteed?
No. It is a service standard, and most applications are decided within it, but some take longer for the reasons above.
Can I get super priority for a spouse visa from Pakistan?
The family priority service usually takes up to 30 working days. Whether a faster option is offered for your family application depends on what is available when you book, so check at the booking stage.
How will I know my visa has been approved?
You will get a decision by email. Since vignettes were phased out on 1 July 2026, your permission is an eVisa, which you view through your UKVI account.
Does a longer wait mean I will be refused?
Not necessarily. Delays often come from routine checks. If your application is refused, our sister site’s guide to UK visa refusal reasons explains what to do next.
