To get a UK Skilled Worker visa in 2026 you need a genuine job offer from a Home Office-licensed employer, a certificate of sponsorship (CoS), a job at the required skill level, a salary that meets the threshold, and English at level B2. The rules tightened sharply in 2024 and 2025, and fake job offers aimed at Pakistan have grown with them, so check every offer before you pay anyone anything.
How the rules work now
The old points table, the £25,600 salary floor and the shortage occupation list described in older articles no longer apply. This is the current picture from GOV.UK, at a principles level:
| Requirement | What it means in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Sponsor | Your employer must hold a Home Office sponsor licence and give you a CoS for a genuine job. |
| Skill level | New applicants generally need a job listed as “higher skilled” (broadly graduate level). “Medium skilled” jobs only qualify if they are on the immigration salary list or temporary shortage list. |
| Salary | Usually at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for the job, whichever is higher. Lower rates can apply to new entrants, some PhD holders and jobs on the immigration salary list (not below £33,400), and to some healthcare and education roles on national pay scales. |
| English | CEFR level B2 for new applicants, unless an exemption applies. |
| Money | £1,270 held for 28 days, unless your sponsor certifies maintenance on your CoS. |
| Fees | From outside the UK, £819 for up to 3 years or £1,618 for longer, plus the immigration health surcharge (usually £1,035 a year). |
Salary rules depend on your occupation code, your CoS date and your circumstances, and the figures are reviewed regularly. Our guides to Skilled Worker salary rules and sponsorship requirements go into the detail, and GOV.UK’s Skilled Worker page has the current tables.
The visa can last up to 5 years before you extend. After 5 years you may be able to apply for settlement, although the government has consulted on an “earned settlement” model that could lengthen this, so check GOV.UK when you plan.
Care worker visas: closed to new overseas applicants
This is the change that matters most for Pakistan. From 22 July 2025, the route for care workers and senior care workers closed to new applications from overseas. Those jobs are now only available to people already in the UK who are extending, updating or switching, under transitional rules.
Care workers who were sponsored after 11 March 2024 also cannot usually bring a partner or children. So if someone in Lahore, Karachi or Mirpur offers you a “UK care visa” in 2026, it is not a real route from Pakistan.
Fake job offers and CoS scams: how to protect yourself
A CoS is not a product you can buy. It is an electronic record your employer creates, and your employer must pay the CoS fee and the immigration skills charge itself. GOV.UK warns sponsors that their licence may be revoked if they ask the worker to pay these fees or any costs linked to their application.
GOV.UK guidance for overseas health and care workers is even more direct: do not pay money to UK-based agencies to find work in the UK, because this is illegal. It says agencies cannot charge you for the sponsor licence fee, the CoS fee or the immigration skills charge, and warns that you risk losing your money or getting a fake CoS that leads to refusal.
This is not theoretical. In July 2026 the High Court wound up a care recruitment company that had taken more than £19,000 from 23 overseas workers, including people from Pakistan, for sponsorship it could never provide. It never filed a single visa application.
Red flags:
- You are asked to pay for a CoS, a “job registration”, “visa processing” or a “sponsorship fee”.
- A visa is “guaranteed”, or you get a job offer without an application or proper interview.
- Payment goes to a personal bank account, in cash, or through an agent’s relative.
- The job is care work, or a low-skilled role, offered to someone applying from Pakistan.
- Contact is only by WhatsApp or a free email address, and the “employer” will not do a video call.
- You are told to say you paid nothing, or to keep the deal secret.
How to check an offer: search the employer on the GOV.UK register of licensed sponsors, check the company on Companies House, and for care roles in England check its registration with the Care Quality Commission. Ask for the occupation code and salary and compare them with the GOV.UK tables. You can report suspected scams through GOV.UK’s visa and immigration scams page.
Using a bought or fake CoS is not a shortcut. Deception can lead to refusal and a ban on returning to the UK, which the Home Office says can last 10 years for visa fraud.
Common mistakes we see from Pakistan applications
- Job and experience don’t match. The occupation code on the CoS should fit your real qualifications and work history.
- Salary below the going rate. The higher of the general threshold and the going rate applies.
- Wrong English evidence. A test must be a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider at B2. A Pakistani degree taught in English needs an Ecctis assessment.
- Missing TB certificate. You need one from a Home Office-approved clinic; in Pakistan these are run by IOM (Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Mirpur) and AMC (Islamabad, Lahore).
- No criminal record certificate for jobs in education, healthcare, therapy or social services.
- Family documents without translations. Nikahnama, NADRA Family Registration Certificate and birth certificates need certified English translations.

Bringing your family
In most “higher skilled” jobs your partner and children under 18 can join you. They need £285 for a partner, £315 for one child and £200 for each other child, held for 28 days, unless your sponsor covers it. Different rules apply to care workers and most “medium skilled” roles, where dependants are heavily restricted.
FAQ
Can I get a care worker visa from Pakistan in 2026?
No. The care worker and senior care worker route closed to new overseas applicants on 22 July 2025.
Is it legal to pay an agent for a certificate of sponsorship?
No. GOV.UK says paying UK-based agencies to find you work is illegal, and sponsors must pay the CoS fee and skills charge themselves. Anyone selling a CoS is a red flag.
What is the minimum salary?
Usually £41,700 or the going rate for the job, whichever is higher, with lower rates in specific cases. Check the current figures on GOV.UK.
How long does a decision take?
GOV.UK says usually 3 weeks from outside the UK after you prove your identity. You can apply up to 3 months before your job start date.
