An interview is not a routine step in every UK visa application from Pakistan. UKVI uses a credibility interview when a caseworker needs to test something the documents do not settle: whether a student is genuine, whether a marriage is real, or whether a visitor’s plans add up. If you are invited, the best preparation is simple: know your own application and tell the truth.
When UKVI interviews, by visa type
The rules and caseworker guidance differ for each route.

The student guidance (Student and Child Student, August 2026) lists two exceptions to the interview-first approach: where you were refused before on genuine student grounds and nothing material has changed, and where there have been many near-identical applications and a sample has already been interviewed. How interviews happen: phone or at a set time and place
The student guidance describes two main formats:
- A telephone interview. A caseworker calls you and asks whether you can answer questions about your application. The interview goes ahead only if you agree. If it is a bad moment, say so politely and ask for another time.
- An arranged interview. UKVI contacts you by email or phone to fix a time and place.
The invitation or call will tell you how it works in your case. Keep the phone number and email on your application working, and check your spam folder while you wait for a decision. If someone claiming to be from UKVI asks you for money or passwords, treat it as a scam and check through official GOV.UK channels.
Typical questions
Nobody can give you a fixed list, and you should not rehearse one. These are the areas the guidance points to.
Students
The student guidance lists your immigration history, education history, post-study plans, personal and financial circumstances, the course provider, your English and any dependants. Expect questions such as:
- Why this course, and why this university?
- How does it link to what you studied or worked on in Pakistan?
- What modules will you take, and how is the course assessed?
- Who is paying, and where did the money come from?
- What will you do after the course?
Spouses and partners
Home Office marriage interview guidance covers the background to the relationship, each partner’s family and immigration history, living arrangements and future plans. It tells officers to be aware of cultural differences and to tailor questions for couples in an arranged marriage. So you may be asked how the rishta came about, when you met, the date of your nikah, how you keep in touch, and where you will live in the UK.
Visitors

How to prepare honestly
- Re-read your full application form and every document you uploaded. The interviewer has them in front of them.
- Know your key dates: course start, marriage, previous travel, any refusals.
- Be ready to explain anything unusual, such as a study gap, a large deposit or an earlier refusal.
- If you do not know or do not remember, say so. A guess that turns out to be wrong looks worse than an honest “I’m not sure”.
- Do not memorise a script or let anyone coach you into answers that are not true. A finding of deception can lead to refusal and damage future applications.
- Sit somewhere quiet, with a charged phone and your documents to hand.
Interpreters and Urdu
For students, English is part of the test. The guidance says a caseworker can treat your English ability as a factor in judging credibility, though they must justify this in any refusal. For visitors and spouses, the aim is to understand your situation. If you are more comfortable in Urdu, Punjabi or Pashto, say so as soon as you are invited and ask whether an interpreter can be arranged. During the interview, if you do not understand a question, ask for it to be repeated. Do not let a relative or agent answer for you.
What happens if you miss it
Under paragraph SUI 14.1 of Part Suitability, an application can be refused if you fail, without a reasonable excuse, to comply with a reasonable requirement to attend an interview. The caseworker guidance looks at how you were told, whether you were given a reasonable time, and your excuse. It gives examples such as illness backed by medical evidence, or severe transport disruption.
If you cannot attend, reply straight away in writing, explain why, attach evidence and ask for a new date. Silence is the worst option.
How answers are used in refusals
What you say becomes evidence. For students, the guidance says a refusal letter must cover information obtained at interview, fully explain the reasons and accurately reflect the interview transcript. For visitors and spouses, answers that contradict your documents, or your sponsor’s or partner’s account, can be given as reasons for refusal.
Your refusal letter will say whether you can ask for administrative review or appeal. GOV.UK says that from outside the UK, an administrative review must be requested within 28 days of the decision. Common mistakes we see from Pakistan applications
- Missing the call because the phone on the form belongs to an agent or an old number.
- Not knowing what is in an application someone else filled in.
- Reciting university rankings but not knowing a single module.
- The sponsor in the UK and the applicant in Pakistan giving different reasons for the trip.
- Overstating a salary or job title that the documents do not support.
FAQ
Will I definitely be interviewed?
No. An interview is not a standard step; UKVI uses one when the caseworker needs more information than the documents give. Our student and spouse guides explain the documents to get right first.
Can I have my documents with me?
Yes, keep your application and key documents to hand so you can check dates. Answer from your own knowledge, though.
What if the call comes at a bad time?
Tell the caseworker and ask to arrange another time. The student guidance says the telephone interview goes ahead only if you confirm you are happy to continue.
Can I prepare with a consultant?
